2008 Connecticut Stem Cell Research Grants Program Established Investigator Award
|
Daniel W. Rosenberg, Ph.D. is a
recipient of the 2008 Connecticut Stem Cell Research Grants
Program Established Investigator Award. Dr. Rosenberg’s
project was one of four selected for funding for this year’s
initiative.
In 2006, responding to the federal restrictions on the
creation of new stem cell lines for research, the
Connecticut General Assembly passed legislation that was
signed into law by Gov. M. Jodi Rell, authorizing the use of
public funds to finance human stem cell research. The law
commits $100 million over a period from 2007 to 2017 to
support this highly promising area of bioscience research.
The aim of Dr. Rosenberg’s research
project, Targeting Lineage Committed Stem Cells to Damaged
Intestinal Mucosa, will be to develop stem cell technology
for the repair of tissue damage associated with longstanding
ulcerative colitis, irradiation and other intestinal
injuries. |
National Research Service Award
|
|
Ms. Kelly Lauter (M.D./Ph.D.
student, advisor: Andrew Arnold) received the National
Research Service Award (F30) for her research project titled
“Molecular Pathogenesis of Hyperparathyroidism in Chronic
Kidney Disease”. The F30 program is funded through the
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney
Diseases (NIDDK) and serves as a research training mechanism
which provides funding for graduate school tuition, dental
school tuition, supplies, travel to national meetings, and a
monthly stipend. |
Paper on Hereditary Cancer Accepted for Publication
|
|
Ms. Jennifer Cyr, a
third-year graduate student in Dr. Christopher Heinen's lab,
had her paper entitled "Hereditary Cancer-associated
Missense Mutations in hMSH6 Uncouple ATP Hydrolysis from DNA
Mismatch Binding" accepted into the Journal for Biological
Chemistry in September 2008. The paper is due to be
published in December 2008. Ms. Cyr is a member of the
Center for Molecular Medicine and the Molecular Biology and
Biochemistry Graduate program. |
2009-2010 Lepow Award
|
|
Ms. Jennifer Cyr, a fourth-year graduate
student in Dr. Christopher Heinen's lab, was named the
2009-2010 Lepow Award Winner. The "Lepow Fellowship" was
established in 1986 at the University of Connecticut Health
Center in honor of Dr. Irwin H. Lepow, a well-known faculty
member, researcher and founding father. This award is given
to support the outstanding fourth-year graduate Ph.D.
student in the Biomedical Sciences Program. Well-done and
congratulations! |
